Vintage Postcard Series Highlights Lamoni’s Heritage

The City of Lamoni is officially unveiling a brand-new series of five official vintage-style postcards celebrating the community's unique identity, rich history, and recognizable landmarks.
Designed as both visitor souvenirs and collectible keepsakes for residents, Lamoni Schools and Graceland University alumni, and friends of the community, the collection highlights five key town assets: Lamoni City Hall, Graceland University's Higdon Administration Building, the historic Coliseum Theatre, Liberty Hall, and the Amish Country Store / Iowa Welcome Center. Each postcard shares a unified retro layout topped with the classic banner "Greetings from Lamoni, IA," creating a cohesive collectible set.
The project began as a grassroots idea from local resident Gary Rees, who pitched the concept to City Administrator Barb Stuck. Bringing the vision to life, local photographer Michael Gruich contributed photography featured across the collection, capturing the distinct character of each location.
“At its heart, this postcard series is about more than sending a message in the mail,” Mayor Douglas Foster said. “It is about learning the stories of the places that make Lamoni unique, celebrating our shared history, and giving residents and visitors alike a tangible piece of community pride to share with others.”
Featured Landmarks & Themes
Lamoni City Hall: Highlights the historic former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad depot, illustrating how Lamoni blends its rail heritage with modern civic life.
Graceland University: Showcases the Higdon Administration Building - the iconic centerpiece on "The Hill" that has welcomed generations of students, alumni, and guests.
Coliseum Theatre: Features downtown Lamoni’s cultural pillar, opened in 1911 as a playhouse and operated by Graceland University since 1925.
Liberty Hall: Displays the 19th-century residence of Joseph and Bertha Smith, offering an intimate look at local architectural and cultural history.
Amish Country Store / Iowa Welcome Center: Captures Lamoni’s southern Iowa portal off Interstate 35, highlighting local goods, traveler insights, and warm hospitality.
Postcards are priced at $1.00 per individual card or $4.00 for the complete five-card set. They are available at City Hall September 17th and will expand to other locations soon. Proceeds from sales will support local community non-profit organization.
“This project demonstrates what happens when dedicated community members bring great ideas to City Hall,” said City Administrator Barb Stuck. “Working together with Gary and Michael, we’ve created a program that promotes tourism, strengthens civic pride, and supports local assets for years to come.”
